What is God doing in our season of waiting? And how can suffering be within God’s plan? Yet, Exodus 1:12 says "But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites." Genesis 46 records that only 70 people went down to Egypt. Exodus 12 records about 600,000 men. So, what happened during the 430 years? Read on and may God’s Holy Spirit stir your heart in this season of waiting upon His timing!
Part II:
When we look back at those 430 years, we will find a most astounding thing—this is not the glorious history of a spiritual giant, but rather a family history full of brokenness.
Abraham, the father of faith, lied twice, calling his wife his sister in order to save his life (Genesis 12, 20). The one who received the promise actually did not believe God could fulfill His promise of giving him a son. He could not wait and followed Sarah's suggestion to sleep with Hagar (Genesis 16), using human methods to "help" God complete the promise. Isaac, who should have learned from his father's failures, also said in Gerar: "She is my sister" (Genesis 26). Weakness actually became a family inheritance.
How about Jacob? He took advantage of his brother’s peril and for a bowl of soup seized the birthright (Genesis 25). He then pretended to be his brother, Esau, to deceive his father and seize the blessing (Genesis 27). The entire blessing was done through craftiness. Then there was the Shechem incident. Simeon and Levi took revenge for their sister and massacred the men of the whole city (Genesis 34). This was not justice; it was indiscriminate killing. Judah slept with Tamar, his daughter in law, because he was not willing to keep his promise (Genesis 38). Then we come to Joseph's brothers. Out of jealousy, they sold their own biological younger brother as a slave (Genesis 37). They took the blood-stained coat of many colors and blatantly lied to their father, Jacob.
This is the family the Messiah was to come from; this is the lineage of our Anointed Redeemer. This is the bloodline through which God promised to bless all nations. If we were to choose a family today to carry the history of salvation, would we choose a family like this? I know I wouldn’t! But God chose them. What does this reveal about God’s character? We see that God's promise is not built on human perfection, but on God's faithfulness. It is not because Abraham was worthy, or Jacob was holy, or Judah was upright, but because—God keeps His covenant.
Perhaps when you look back at your own family and look at your past, you will say: "Lord, my life is a mess." But remember—God can write the history of salvation through brokenness. God can accomplish His plan through failed people. God can layout the most glorious redemption against the darkest background. The 430-year wait was not because people were good, but because God is faithful. This is grace God led them from Canaan to Egypt. It was not an accident. It was not a failure. Rather, it was God's arrangement.
Sometimes, the transitions in our lives are not accidents, but God’s divine protection and precise plan.
Part III… Yes, wait until tomorrow!
